The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law at the British University in Dubai (BUiD) is a research-focused doctoral programme designed to advance original scholarship and professional innovation in law, following the British model in which students are mainly trained in the first year on research skills before beginning work on their thesis from the second year onwards.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, graduates will be able to:

Demonstrate a critical understanding of advanced research methodologies and techniques and apply such methodologies and techniques in the field of Business Law

Analyse the applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry in Business Law

Integrate knowledge from different Business Law disciplines to assess complex legal contexts, opportunities and risks

Design and implement empirical research projects, generate new solutions/techniques and solve complex legal problems

Create and interpret new knowledge, through original research or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, which can potentially extend the forefront of academic research in law and/or relevant areas of professional practice, and merit publication

Academic Requirements7

1A recognised Master's degree in a subject related to the programme with a cumulative GPA greater than 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale (or equivalent)
2A recognised Bachelor's degree in a subject related to the programme, in a field related to Law (those without sufficient background need to complete additional master's-level courses)
3Minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213 CBT, 79 iBT) or IELTS academic score of 6.0, or equivalent recognised test
4Chosen area of Business Law study must be one which can be supervised by staff within the University
5Initial research proposal, including motivation to study for a PhD, discussed through an interview
6Certificate of equivalency issued by MOHESR for degrees awarded outside the UAE
7Copy of passport and Emirates ID (if available); Al Ethbara Number for UAE nationals
