Physiotherapy (also known as Physical Therapy) is a healthcare profession focused on the prevention, assessment, treatment, and management of movement disorders and functional limitations. Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who evaluate, diagnose, and treat individuals across the lifespan from newborns to older adults who experience medical conditions, injuries, or health-related impairments that affect movement and daily functioning. Physiotherapists utilize comprehensive patient histories, physical examinations, and relevant laboratory and imaging findings to develop evidence-based treatment plans that optimize mobility, function, and quality of life. The profession of physiotherapy is evolving rapidly, with contemporary practitioners expected to possess advanced knowledge, clinical reasoning, and professional competencies to meet the growing demand for autonomous practice and evidence-based healthcare delivery. The pedagogical approach of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) program incorporates diverse and innovative learning strategies designed to accommodate different learning styles within a diverse student population. The curriculum emphasizes active learning and significantly reduces reliance on traditional lecture-based teaching through student-led seminars, group projects, community engagement activities, case-based learning, and problem-based learning methodologies. The learning outcomes of the BPT program are aligned with Level 6 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF Emirates), ensuring that graduates meet nationally recognized standards of knowledge, skills, and professional competence. The current BPT curriculum, implemented from the 2024 cohort at the College of Health Sciences, Gulf Medical University, is benchmarked against international standards and has received international accreditation with ‘World Physiotherapy’. The program comprises 133 credit hours, delivered over four years across eight semesters. To ensure graduates are equipped with the latest knowledge and clinical competencies in physical therapy, the curriculum places strong emphasis on experiential learning and one-to-one clinical supervision. Students receive extensive clinical education at GMU’s well-established healthcare facilities and are also placed at a variety of affiliated healthcare centres across the UAE throughout the program. These clinical experiences enable students to integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, enhancing their professional skills, clinical decision-making, and patient management capabilities. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) degree and are qualified to practice as Physical Therapists. The program serves as a strong foundation for a rewarding and impactful career in healthcare, while also providing opportunities for advanced studies, specialization, research, and lifelong professional development.
